08 Nov What is Sublimation?
Sublimation printing is a process that transfers high-quality images to a variety of fabrics and fuses the designs with the fabrics. Because the designs become a permanent part of the fabric, they are durable and resistant to fading.
How Does It Work?
Sublimation is a term that describes the transition of a substance from one state to another, similar to how the terms “freezing” and “melting” refer to changes in the state of water. In this case, we are describing a solid changing directly to a gas, as in the case of dry ice. Dry ice skips the liquid form and transforms directly from solid to gas. Dry ice doesn’t melt; it sublimates.
There are special inks involved in the process of sublimation printing that are dye solids suspended in a carrier liquid. The dye solids convert to gas when you apply pressure and heat. The heat and pressure also cause the pores of the fabric to expand which allows the dye to bind with the fibers while in gas form. When the fabric cools, the dye returns to solid form and becomes permanently embedded in the fabric.
